road trippin’

{ via }

On Tuesday, I’ll be making my way to Denver for almost a week.

OnStar invited me to participate in this epic road trip to get there and check out the NAHJ Convention before heading on back to Chicago on Sunday.

Needless to say, I’m pretty excited. The conference should be super interesting and great for networking. It’s been a very long time since I’ve taken part on a road trip so that should be fun. We’ll be stopping at a couple places on the way; do I have an readers in Nebraska or Iowa? If so, I’ll be passing on through! Is there even anything to do in those states?

DO THEY EVEN EXIST?!

Anyway, I’m even more excited because I’ve never been to Colorado and I have a few lovely friends out there, so I’m planning on seeing them too!

This is where I need your help, road trippers! What are the essentials? I’ll be making a Target run tomorrow night to pick up a few odds and ends. Anything you think I ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE for my trip?

So far, I have a fully loaded iPod and my big headphones for when music in the car might not be agreeable to my snobbish tastes. I have a couple books as well to pass the time. The car will have wifi so it’s not like I’ll be completely dead to the world, but it’s good to have options, right?

Road trip must haves.

GO.

(PS, Omaha is a city in Nebraska, not a separate state, hehehe). Have fun on the road trip!

Have a great time!! I love a good roadtrip!

I’d say bottled water and easy snacks- I can get grumpy if I’m hungry and/or thirsty.

Reading is a good option but if people are chatty it’s good to have fashion or design magazines since those are full of pictures and don’t require as much concentration.

Good luck!

What? The car will have wifi? I have not experienced this miracle yet!

Also sounds like a good time! Hope you have one!

The College World Series is going on in Omaha right now. Interstate traffic between games can be a little nuts. In downtown, there’s the Old Market, the Riverfront (they have outdoor music during the weekends) and the NODO area, which is the artsy part of town. Lots of stuff out west and the indie music scene is in the Benson neighborhood. Des Moines is a lot of fun this time of year too.

yay, have fun!!! sorry can’t think of any essentials right now. too. early.

That sounds like a great trip! Those U-shaped neck pillows, as dorky as they look, are pretty fantastic. I just embrace the old-ladyness of them.

I think you’re dead on about the playlist thing – Chels made a KILLER road trip playlist for our Denver to Vegas trip last month, and YOU have awesome mixtape skillz, so I kind of want a copy of whatever you come up with.

Also – I CAN NOT WAIT TO SEE YOU.

it’s to bad this road trip doesn’t come to california because then it would be the best ever.

however, i recommend some good travel food, like popcorn or pita chips or candy and lots of water and some magazines maybe even some adlibs?

but yay have so much fun and cannot wait to hear about it!

gummy bears, peanut m&m’s, some good books (which you will because I read your post on shoptopia) and some quality trash (new issues of People & US weekly) thrown in for good measure.

The car has wifi???? Genius.

I say that you must have lots of snacks and Harry Potter audio books. Also, some trashy magazines.

[Reply]

you are SO LUCKY that you can read in the car!!

i get way carsick and i can’t look at anything except out the window.

oh and car wifi? FUCK YEAH.

must haves? bring handiwipes. you never know.

[Reply]

Good snackies and drinks are must-haves. I agree with Tia-handiwipes/napkins are important too! I usually bring a hoodie and ball it up and use it as a pillow in a pinch. Have fun :)

Sounds amazing and like so much fun!!! I suppose I’m a little late on the must-haves, but it looks like you got covered. Good luck!!

I hope you’re having a great time!

I just took a road trip from Arizona to Seattle, and our road trip must-haves turned out to be twizzlers, a good road atlas, and The Bird and The Bees’ Hall and Oates tribute album. Also, paper soap for grody rest stop bathrooms with no soap and a book about the animals and plants in the states along the route.

CHEETOS.

MUST HAVE.

I do the road trip thing often and find that the essential top 10 that I almost never leave home without are key. 1) pair of flip flops – I hate having shoes on all the time, but your flops are good for quick trips out of the car. 2) Hoodie – who knows who likes the temperature set at what, so the whole light layers thing is key. 3) Burts Bees – any essentials kit you can find, but I’m a fan of the lip balm and hand lotion (for the dry hands after the washing with soap or paper soap from the grody rest stops) 4) Refillable water bottle. It gets expensive to buy water, so filling at rest stops is key. 5) House of Night books (or your current book list)… passes time quickly. 6) Pillow – MUST HAVE) 7) Pair of extra socks (in case you get cold or wet.) 8) Wireless essentials – iPod, portable gaming, cell phone, laptop. 9) Snacks & energy 1 drink per day – partial to skittles, Mint mojito gum, & NOS energy drinks. and 10) The now infamous “I should be ashamed but I’m not…” Playlist. Make all your friends make one so you can laugh at each other! ENJOY!
