VAGINA VAGINA VAGINA PERIOD PERIOD PERIOD
Was that weird? Did it make you uncomfortable?
Well, I recently started writing for a new site (U by Kotex) and the mission is to help stop all the weirdness about periods. They happen. It’s not a secret to anyone. It’s time to get over it and get educated, don’t you think?
Let’s look at some numbers:
More than 1/2 of women feel that society looks down upon talking about vaginal health. 70% believe that it’s time for change, but only 45% feel empowered to make a difference.
72% of women believe that society is more open to discussing men’s health. And 60% of those women feel that they’re expected to keep vaginal health issues to themselves.
60% of women are more likely to turn to the Internet than to other women, including their friends or mothers, for information or answers about their vaginal health.
Most women claim to be knowledgeable about vaginal health issues, but more than 1/3 cannot dispel some basic myths. Nearly 1 in 3 women don’t know that a woman can get pregnant if she has sex during her period.
(check out more statistics here)
Pretty crazy, huh?
Kotex is also calling out the ridiculousness of tampon ads with their newest advertisement. It’s actually pretty funny so check it out.
It really is a great campaign and I’m proud to be a part of it.
Now do me a favor? Check out the U by Kotex site. Sign the declaration and a dollar will be donated to social change. Follow @JordanGetsReal on Twitter. Or become a fan on Facebook. Anything.
Help Break The Cycle.

Love the ad. Glad you can say vagina on your blog because Kotex can’t say it on the air. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/16/business/media/16adco.html

You know, you DO see more “I can get my penis up” commercials than “My vagina is drier than fuck” commercials.
And I love that commercial! I thought I was the only one who dances around in white spandex while spinning in slow motion. O_o

These look awesome. Great packaging. Also love the change they’re trying to bring.
I became more comfortable with my period once I switched to using a cup instead of pads or tampons. If I wasn’t in love with my diva cup and lunette, I’d probably try these.

I don’t have a problem with talking about my period to be honest; it just doesn’t bother me because I know that it happens to most women under the age of 40, and some over. I do, however, have a problem talking about my vagina willy nilly unless it’s to a doctor because why do people need to know? If some guy started talking about his penis I’d be a little bit disgusted – tmi dude.

So true! I still don’t think that women’s issues get enough billing/time/discussion. I mean, how long did it take for HPV to become something women weren’t ashamed to discuss!? Declaration will be signed momentarily…!

This is so true! Look at how easy that Viagra and ED is talked about, but *gasp* talking about something that most EVERY woman experiences is taboo? That’s bull!
Vagina! Tampon! Period! MENSTRATION!

So, I can’t even count on my two hands how many times I’ve shown my vagina to a room full of people in the past year. I have no shame anymore when it comes to anything down south.
Still, during my infertility journey, I have learned that a SHOCKING number of women have absolutely ZERO clue about their cycles and getting pregnant. It really is shocking.

Hahahaha I seriously hate “feminine hygiene” ads. I admit to kind of laughing at some Invisible pad ad because it was so stupid, but seriously. I hate 99% of them. They make women seem vapid, they don’t refer to your period as if it doesn’t exist, and they involve dumb male models – makes me want to slap someone.
WTF.
There’s blood. Get over it.
*sigh*

What a great campaign. I bet those pre-teens will really appreciate it. Also, your post made me think of my 6th grade teacher in sex ed and he made us say “penis penis penis” and “vagina vagina vagina” to get it out of our heads!

@Stephanie, we were asked over 100 questions on Thursday. IN ONE DAY. It’s obviously so needed and I’m very happy I can be apart of it.
I wish there was something similar around when I was that age.
