thanks, going back to school and hey you hire me!

Yesterday’s post had been brewing for a very long time. It was definitely time to get it out regardless of who reads it. Maybe some felt it was out of line or mean but this is my place to write and I refuse to censor myself. And sometimes you just need to vent. Thank you to those who commented, I appreciate it more than you know.

That aside, when the hell did it become November? Seriously? 2009 is absolutely flying by. I’m kind of okay with that though.

I think in January I will be returning to school. Clearly the no degree thing isn’t really helping me out regardless of my extreme awesomeness and degree in the internetz. And at 25 years old, I shouldn’t be right here. It is time to load up on classes and buckle down. Get this nonsense out of the way and do what I want to do. I guess I need a little piece of paper for people to take me seriously. But once I do get that plus knowing what I know = POWERHOUSE. I’ll be unstoppable, bitches.

(I’m not a school person at all, if you haven’t figured that out yet.)

Today and the rest of the weekend I’ll be hitting the pavement to find some super fun, retail work (Is retail ever super fun? I don’t think so). I’ll supplement my income with that and the babysitting I’ve been doing to pay for school and things I may need. I figure everyone is hiring for seasonal work so hopefully I can find something decent.

Places that should hire me:

  • Apple (shiny pretty techy things PLUS a discount?)

Um, that’s all I got. Okay, all I WANT but I hear they are kinda super hard to get hired by so that’s probably out of the question.

Okay okay, I guess there are other places I wouldn’t mind. So let’s hope something turns up.

But I’m not stopping by search for work in social media. I know what I’m good at and that I would be a great asset to any team. I can always take evening or weekend classes if I do end up finding something full-time.

Yay for Friday!

My co-worker has his second interview there today. They seem to be an awesome company to work for. You should go for it!

OR! Work in retail. It sucks, but discounts are awesome.

@Liz, I’m kind of willing to take anything at the moment. But Apple would most definitely be my first choice!

i’m glad you aren’t afraid to censor yourself. and really? we SHOULDN’T have to. it’s why it’s a blog- if you dont like our thoughts? stop reading.

Good luck with the school thing :)

Woo! I’m so excited for you Jamie!! This sounds like a great idea, and like it will give you a great platform to jump from. If you need any school moral support? Well, I think you’ve seen me whining on twitter. =)

I think the people who commented on your post saying you were being mean might have been the same ones who barraged me with e-mail telling me that my mom was a feminist hero after I posted about India. They’re people who have no idea what you’re going through, cannot relate in the least, and they’re a great excuse to giggle at your comments over a glass of wine.

@Kyla Roma, I will most definitely call you when I’m having a mental breakdown over math. I’m dreading the math. It makes me cry ahaha

I would just like to get this out there: a degree will NOT help you in your job search. I have one, with honors, magna cum laude that I did in 3 and a half years, but no one cares. Don’t blame your joblessness on the lack of degree. It’s just a terrible time for finding a job.

[Reply]

I’m going back in January too! I didn’t finish my first degree till I was 25 and it was in English, and now unfortunately I am finding out that since I don’t have a degree or any “real” experience in marketing/PR, I probably won’t be able to break into that. Now I’m making myself do a Master’s just so I can say I’ve taken formal classes, even though I do this stuff informally every day.

No matter what the media says about a college education being “overrated” these days, the piece of paper still matters so much. You will do great, though! Unstoppable!

Jamie Reply:

@Rebekah, I completely agree on the formal stuff. Pretty much why I’m going too!

[Reply]

Great plan! You can do it. And don’t listen to people. They are stupid. Sometimes. <3

@Mrs Soup, thanks :)

I loved your honesty yesterday. Good luck on the job hunt! I just took something seasonal myself a few weeks ago. Kudos on being brave enough to go back to school.

I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and I can totally relate with you on this one. I’m 25 and feel as though I shouldn’t be “here” either. I should have this great career, relationship (if not married with babies on the way), and know exactly who I am and what I want. I’m still working on all of the above. I’m a graphic designer who will also be returning to school but for something completely different…dental hygiene. I think a lot of people our age are going back to school because you almost need to in this economy. What will you be returning for?

[Reply]

Jamie Reply:

@Lauren, more than likely something with PR or Marketing. I can tie in my social media skills with that so it could work out nicely.

Venting is necessary. If we don’t blow off some steam we’ll kill people. X_x

I think an education is ALWAYS a good thing. Now, that doesn’t mean that I’m not a neurotic mess when enrolled for classes, so I feel for ya.

I work for a nonprofit. A.K.A. I don’t make much, but in order to do what I do I had to have a bachelors in SOMETHING. So, the degree helped me.

Best of luck.

@Heather Rose, agreed on the helping not kill people thing ;)

I find department stores are always a good bet for getting seasonal work. Maybe give any around your way a go . . .

[Reply]

Good for you. I’m dreading it but I’m also contemplating going back and getting that stupid piece of paper too. Good luck on the job hunt. How about a Coach outlet store? If not just for the discount.

[Reply]

Jamie Reply:

@Toe, I’m not much of a Coach gal but I’m hoping to find something super awesome!

[Reply]

woo for you, i’m so excited for you jamie and i know you can do it all! woo. fingers crossed you find a fabulous retail job, cause really how could they not love you?

[Reply]

Jamie Reply:

@katelin, it seems like I waited a bit too long to make this decision. Most places have already staffed for the holidays. Boo! I’m going to keep trying though.

[Reply]

Congratulations on going back to school. From another person who is not into school, it is really worth it to have that stupid piece of paper. Good luck!

[Reply]

I know exactly what you mean Jamie…

I am 26, and have been a senior for like 5 years. I have yet to finish my degree. I like telling myself it’s because of family, and financial issues. When really it’s just me not doing what I know I should do.

Kudos for pushing yourself darlin, and you have so many of us rooting for you!

[Reply]

So proud of you.

[Reply]

I read somewhere that it’s harder to get into Harvard than to get hired at an Apple Store. I hope that’s not true. Good luck!

[Reply]

Er…I mean…the other way around. Harder to get hired at an Apple Store than get into Harvard, I meant.

It’s still too damn early.

[Reply]

I’m not a big school person too, I’m trying so hard to graduate now. You can do it, Jamie. Then you can score us discounts in Apple too when you’re already working there being all super busy and tech-y and fabulous!

[Reply]

Yay you for taking the step forward. We should start a business together. Something to do with blogging and puppies/kitties. And cupcakes. The rest will fall together.

[Reply]

Hooray for school! I know you can do it. I’m thinking about going back to get a masters myself. You can’t really do anything with a psychology degree all by itself.

Also – I hear you on the retail. I just started working my new seasonal retail gig. Woo Hoo!

[Reply]

I walked pass Banana Republic the other day. They are hiring and um, I kind of want to work there. I’m sure someone will hire you and maybe it will be a fun place to work, too!? Congrats on the decision to go back to school. It’s never easy, and sometimes not fun, but you’ll be glad to get it done! Can’t wait to hear about it as you go forward!

[Reply]

Bad Strategy! You have to choose a retail store full of things you hate. This is very important, or else you will spend your entire paycheck on shiny pretty things instead of, you know, food.

[Reply]

Good luck going back to school. It really is a good time for it. Especially if you’re working on a bachelor’s degree — hello federal financial aid! :D
