hair is serious business

I should have just rescheduled.

But I was stuck in traffic and running late so I missed my regular stylist. I could either wait another couple of weeks or see someone else.

Guess which one I did?

NEVER SEE SOMEONE ELSE.

Little bit of a back story: I keep my hair long. Very long, usually about mid-back or longer.

I’ve been told I have great hair so I’ve taken that and ran with it. And I think I do (when I put the effort in to making it look good instead of wrapping it up in a bun on top of my head).

So it’s kind of a security blanket for me. Maybe if people think I have pretty hair they won’t see the rest of me. The rest of me that I’m so uncomfortable with.

Chances are if you see me, I’m probably wrapping my hair around my fingers or fiddling with it one way or another. It’s what I do when I’m anxious or have something on my mind. Like I said – security blanket.

Anyway, I seen someone else. And now my hair is short. Anyone who sees me, will think I’m crazy for saying it’s short. It’s just past shoulder length.

But for me?

That’s short.

I can barely pull it in a bun without it sticking out everywhere. My pony tail is so short. It doesn’t feel right when twirling. It slips through my fingers too fast.

I feel kind of naked. And I don’t like it.

Moral of this story is: if there is bad mojo flying around on hair cut day?

ALWAYS RESCHEDULE.

I’m sorry this happened! I’m sure it doesn’t look as bad as you think it does, but it still sucks. I will keep that moral in mind.

wow, i hate that bad surprise at the salon…i used to have dredlocks, for over three years and now am at this weird growing-my-hair back stage after cutting them off… i had no idea there was so many ways to make my hair look stupid until i started telling hairdressers to just “make me look good” haha

finally i found “ashley” and she is great, and i am NEVER LETTING HER GO hahaha

Oh honey, I feel your pain! Back in the Spring, my regular stylist was gone, so I saw someone else. It was a disaster. Not a bad cut, but not what I wanted. I got so sick of people telling me they liked the cut, because I just wasn’t happy. At least hair grows!

I learned this lesson the hard way myself. Last year I decided to get my hair trimmed. Well, my hair dresser called in sick but told me about this “totally amazing” new hair dresser they had in the shop. Being as laid back as I am I went with it. To make a long story short, I walked out of the shop with a bob. I had shoulder lenghth hair that I was in the process of growing out further and she simply decided to take it upon herself to chop it off. I was SO mad I could barely speak. Even after I told her what I wanted, she did her own thing because she thought it looked better.

All I can say is never again. NEVER.

Oh man – I know the feel. I always complain about getting my hair cut. Even when I’m just getting a trim, I feel shorn. My stylist thinks I’m nuts.

I am the same way with my hair. I always kept it pocahontas long until about 2/3 years ago. Then I let my BFF who is also a stylist cut it. I hated it for a day or so, but then I loved it! I learned how to work with the natural curl and do a lot more things with it. I am still working on letting go of my hair insecurities but I completely understand where you are coming from and how you are feeling.

I went to get my hair highlighted recently and my regular person was sick. Now I’m a little more blonde than I would like. I have to keep reminding myself that hair grows, but I’m still slightly freaked out whenever I look in the mirror. I feel your pain!

Hair IS serious bizness. I don’t get manicures/pedicures, massages, facials, fancy shoes/handbags, night creams… but I WILL pay $90 for a haircut. Am I crazy?

ugh I hate that! I used to go home to Pittsburgh just to get my hair done. Even though I told the stylist the colours that were used on my hair, she didn’t leave it in long enough. oh well.

I still think your hair looks fine though. I always just try to remember that it will grow back if I get a cut I don’t like.

I know the hair story. I went to a new stylist once in high school and I hated it. And I looked ridiculous for a really long time. Since then I’ve had only two stylists, one for eight years, the other for four. If I don’t click with them, I won’t go back. I know how you feel. Hair is important!!! Hope yours grows back quickly.

awe! i think it looks fine! definitely looks longer in that picture though…it looks about the length of my hair, which everyone keeps telling me is “getting really long.” hahah! it’ll grow back sooner than you know!

you and your hair are too adorable for words but I understand what you mean.

Once you find and trust a certain hairstylist – DON’T EVER LEAVE THEM. because regret will inevitably ensue.

I totally feel your pain. Whenever I get my hair cut, if they happen to cut it too short I feel like a part of me is literally missing. The worst is when you’re washing it and your hands are sudsing it up then you suddenly hit air. It always startles me.
However, that being said, I love your new cut! I wish I could pull off bangs!

Aw, you look beautiful! But I know what you’re talking about, I feel uncomfortable for the first couple of days after I get my hair chopped off.

Don’t worry, it’ll grow on you. Or grow out eventually.

Happy Friday!!

For what it’s worth, the new cut looks great on you! I know exactly what you mean about hiding behind the hair. I recently got a different-for-me-haircut and was really scared but I’ve gotten used to it and am in love with it now.

Hair.. is always so touchy. I feel your pain!

(I went to my new local salon to test them out and have a ‘trim’ and ended up losing four inches of hair. Just last week, and I still haven’t gotten used to it.)

P.S. You still look like you’re rocking it, though. :) x

I once made the same mistake (btw, yours looks fine!) and ended up with purple remnants of the dye job at my roots. While she was drying my hair, I pointed it out to her. She said, “Oh, I was hoping you wouldn’t notice.”

Points are taken, I definitely had my hair “mishandled” in several ocassions with the new hairstylists. Sometimes I need to learn to WAIT if I don’t wanna ruin it! Wise words, Jamie!

[Reply]

I almost cried the first time I chose to cut my hair short (shoulder length) for the first time, so I can only imagine how you feel after this mishap. It will grow back and even though you don’t feel right, I am sure you look beautiful anyway :)

I asked for a trim on Saturday by my regular stylist and lost almost 2 inches. I know how you feel…. when it’s too short, you just know. It feels different and it sucks! Here’s hoping to quick hair growth!

WORD. I once went in for a trim with a new person and ended up walking out looking like Carol Brady. She swore adding layers would take off the weight since its so thick, but all it took was a whole year to grow out.

It sucks, I know, but you’ll get used to it. And at least you now definitively know not to attempt a different stylist. Sorry you had to learn the crappy way though.

And it all depends where you go. I’ve been to two different stylists where I get my hair done, and both have done a phenom job.
