Well I haven’t just yet. You see, I’m in quite a predicament here.
What do you do when your dress is adorable but too short to wear on it’s own? What do you do when in the past you’ve repeatedly screamed from the rooftops that LEGGINGS ARE JUST NOT FUCKING PANTS. STOP WEARING THEM AS PANTS.
Do I stand on principal and refuse to wear this cute dress even though it’s has pretty purple print and shows off the girls quite nicely? Or do I suck it up, throw some leggings on under that bitch and rock it anyway?
All while eating some serious crow.
(and wearing my adorable new sandals)
I mean they definitely won’t be worn as pants. The dress is just a bit too short like if I were to bend over, it would be all OH HEY JAMIE’S ASS, THANKS FOR COMING TO BLOGHER. And then I’d have to make a blog for my ass since everyone will obviously see it and duh, if you’re going to BlogHer you need a blog.
AND
Tim Gunn will be there. Do I really want to face a “this worries me” from him once he catches a glimpse of my outfit? I mean it’s Tim Gunn. What he says goes. Or maybe Tim would say MAKE IT WORK. But would I have made it work, with leggings? Does Tim Gunn look down on leggings? Or maybe he would be like, THIS GIRL IS WEARING LEGGINGS! FASHION MAKEOVER ASAP! and then he takes me shopping and we become BFF.
Obviously, this is serious business.
To legging or not to legging?
Help a girl out.

USUALLY I would totally veto leggings. BUT if paired with the right outfit, I think you can probably get it off (TWSS)
And I think if you OWN the outfit then you’ll be just fine.
Can we see a picture of the dress? Maybe?

Normally, I’m not a fan of leggings in any situation, but when in comes to short dresses they are somewhat of a neccessity . . . and I don’t think they are functioning as pants in this situation – they’re more like tights. . .

I love leggings with dresses. I think it’s so cute. I know, that makes you hate me, but it’s comfy and cute all at once.

I say go with the leggings only so that Tim Gunn can pull you aside and take you on a shopping spree where he’ll pay for everything and then you can be on TV and stuff.
It’ll be EPIC.

I don’t like the whole leggings as pants thing… but legging so you can wear that short skirt/dress, totally.
I was having a fashion dilemma too for this day. Not only is Tim Gunn going to be there, but I’ve got BowlHer and then the boy’s got a concert (his band is headlining)… so I need an appropriate outfit for all of these things.
.. I’m thinking jeans, cute shoes, tube top w/ very light cardigan… (Boy is convinced that tube top won’t survive bowling…)

Here’s the thing, I totally get what you’re saying. Fashion trends come up and I want to say things like :”no, never will I wear that, and it’s just hideous.” (ie: capri pants, bermuda shorts, leggings, skinny jeans, etc). Out of that list I’ve worn 4 of the 5. So instead of saying, “never will I” I now just say “hmmm…I’m not sure” and wait. Because with passing time I may decide I do like it after all.

If you feel too bare with just the dress, I would go with the leggings. Its not as if you are wearing leggings with a t-shirt. Comfort is key though, so go with what makes you most comfortable. If you’re gonna spend the day tugging at your dress or worrying about bending over, you might want to try another outfit.

Throw some leggings under that bitch and ROCK THE LEGGINGS. Or maybe I’m just biased because I totally do that with too-short dresses. My ass is fine and all, but I don’t need to show it to the whole world.
And Tim Gunn will be at BlogHer? Now I’m all nervous.
PS – what the F do I wear on Friday night?! Send me a pic of your dress, STAT.

I am of NO help in the advice department whatsoever because my idea of fashion is shorts, a t shirt, and flip flops, and my biggest challenge every day is trying NOT to spill food on my clothes. Or at least hoping I spill on an inconspicuous spot. I only know who Tim Gunn is because I saw him on the Biggest Loser and gathered he was something of a ‘big deal’, lol.
That said, whatever route you go, I’ll be happy to meet you at BlogHer. And your ass, if it comes to it. And I’d read a blog by your ass.
That might be one of the weirdest comments I’ve left to date.

I would rather see someone wearing leggings than see someone’s ass. I’m not a fan of leggings but I think that they can look cute under dresses. My rule is: leggings are okay as long as they cover the crotch.

just wear really cute underwear. i mean it. cute little lacy boy shorts. and squat instead of bend should you need to get down or something like that.
because you really, really, REALLY can’t wear leggings in front of t. gunn. in any other situation… leggings are perfectly acceptable.
ps. this is all coming from a girl that is wearing a VERY short dress IN THE OFFICE today, sans leggings. so i think you’ll be okay.

If you go without, just be sure to figure out the logistics of sitting and picking something up.

WAIT WAIT WAIT. Tim Gunn will be there?!
WHY AM I NOT THERE? SO envious!
Anyway, I say it’s ok to wear leggings with the outfit. Here’s my standpoint: Leggings ARE NOT PANTS. I concur. However, when pairing them with a dress, you’re not wearing them AS pants. Just as…an additional element of the outfit. If you were wearing, say, a shirt and leggings, then they would be pants.
SO wear them! And TELL Tim Gunn that you’re making them work!
(And then get his autograph for me and i’ll love you forever).

I would just suck it up and wear the leggings. And also, I suspect that most people who wear something trendy are eating crow, because trends take awhile to catch on and at first lots of people make fun of them. I wonder how many Croc-wearers are secretly eating crow?

I vote for the leggings. Think of what a darling story it will be when you tell your future children how you managed to become best buds with Tim Gunn. It will either include his signature raised eyebrow and a “oh dear…” as he escorts you to the local stores, or it will include a “fabulous!” as he snaps a photo of you for future inspiration. Really, there’s no bad outcome.

As long as it’s the right length, leggings with a dress is okay. Too long or too short (aka a shirt) and it’s a disaster. Choose wisely.

Leggings all the way! I’m telling you, I’ve been pro-legging for quite awhile and they will change your life. Okay, well, that’s a bit drastic but they will definitely make that dress appropriate and will avoid a potential ass-flashing!!

So long as the leggings are a solid color and don’t take away too much from the dress, you may be able to get away with them. Or you could always go for a nice blouse-skirt combo, that’s always a winner.

I don’t think wearing leggings with a short dress is like wearing leggings as pants (check me out using american lingo – in my world, pants are actually underwear after all…). I just think you’re protecting yourself, lol.
I rarely like going bare-legged unless i’m on holiday so I tend to either go for leggings or a medium-thickness of black tights (pantyhose?) when I’m wearing short skirts or dresses. It makes sense. Especially since my legs never tan as well as the rest of me . . .

They’re not pants if you’re wearing them with a dress! If someone is wearing them with a shirt, then it’s ohpleasegodno, no matter who it is or how nice a booty and legs they have. But with a dress? It has the potential to be adorable.
