decluttering

I’ve been feeling like life is a little messy lately.

The other day I overreacted to something I totally shouldn’t have. I’m losing patience with my part-time nanny job. And patience? Well it’s something you really need as a nanny. I need something more fulfilling. Something that requires more thought and that leaves me feeling challenged. The job application process is nerve wracking. Going on interview after interview and always being second best is totally frustrating. Getting hyped on possible opportunities that always manage to fall through is the worst. Needless to say, I’ve just be all around kind of down on myself.

I decided one of the ways I am going to work on changing this is by decluttering. No, I’m not just talking about decluttering my desk or something.

It’s time to declutter my life. I need some feng shui or something to get my life in order. I don’t know, whatever I need, it just means a lot less shit.

I’m hitting my closets. Yanking out all kinds of old clothes that don’t fit or are out of date. Getting ready to donate or sell. Going through my bookshelf and DVDs to do the same. Cleaning out under my bed. Only God knows what I will find under there. All the packratty stuff I’ve been holding on to for ages is getting thrown out finally. I’m clearing some stuff out of my room to put down my yoga mat and weights to be my official “I Hate Jillian Michaels’ Face” corner. Rearranging my desk and bookshelves to make me feel like I have more space.

It sounds kind of silly but maybe if everything around me is more organized, other things will start falling into place.

I totally do the same thing. Getting rid of “excess” always makes me feel better. And in terms of the job search, yeah, it sucks, but you’ll find something eventually. I have faith in you :)

I definitely agree. Sometimes it even gets to the point where I feel like I need to simplify my facebook profile haha! Good luck to ya, I hope things do fall into place for you!

I don’t think that sounds silly at all. I think when you can put things in order – control the thing you can, it’s easier to make room for dealing with the chaos. And, when a new job does come along, you’ll have stuff taken care of at home so you can focus on your new work.

It sounds like you’ve got the right idea. And just giving your living space a once over might be enough to help you mentally re-frame your outlook on things. :)

I am SO with you on this and if you have any tips you can share, please do! I’m all over what Nicole deemed Project: Simplify this year and the sheer amount of stupid STUFF I have is SO stressful. Good luck, and here we go!

I completely agree with this! I know one of the other ways I try to declutter is to organize my online life/presence, evaluating what sites/accounts I use and deleting accordingly. It always feels as if you have a bit more control over things.

How are you planning to donate the books/DVDs? I’ve looked at programs a few times and have a hard time finding one that fits.

I think you’ll be glad you’re doing this. I just went through my own closet simplifying attempt, and I certainly did.

Decluttering is my favorite thing to do. It’s one of the few things I have control over. Good luck and hope it makes you feel better!

you have know idea the amount of pleasure i get from de-cluttering and simplifying life.

that above statement is a bit sad, yes, but TOTALLY true. it will help with clearing your mind and re-energizing you.

[Reply]

I think that’s a great idea! Sometimes you need a fresh start, a clean slate.

I’ve been doing the same thing. A few weeks ago, I took four trash bags filled with clothes to the Salvation Army. I’ve also sold things on ebay that I just don’t use, and I need to bring some books to the library, for them to use for their book sale maybe! My apartment is way too small to be this filled with crap!

I feel like my life is more on track when I have a clean house – lame, I know, but it’s also rarely THAT clean anyway – so maybe decluttering will help. Or at least it’ll help ease your mind a bit, help you refocus and then you can tackle some new possibilities.

Oh, hi. I could have written this *exact* post myself. I’m in the same boat re: the job thing (always second best or overqualified, so they don’t choose me “for my own good”), and I am also spending today shredding things and clearing the closets and otherwise purging things.

And I hate Jillian Michaels and her 30 Day Shred and the damn plank position in level 2.

Everyone can use a little spring cleaning every now and then. I should probably follow your example and do it myself.

there is something liberating about decluttering your life. it’s like starting fresh. i do it every 6 months or so. stuff it just stuff! at least that’s what I have to tell myself ;)

Cleaning out my closet always helps me when I’m feeling overwhelmed, it gives you that satisfying feeling of having control over things.

[Reply]

I hear you, cleaning and organizing for some reason always makes me feel more centered and in control when life is yick. Good luck!

[Reply]

i do that too whenever i feel like my life is a bit uncontrollable. i work on what i actually can control and it always makes me feel better.

[Reply]

Decluttering is so frickin hard for me! I always feel so much better when it is done, but the process is painful.

[Reply]

Dude. I’m so with you on this. For me, decluttering is one of the few things I CAN control, not like sweaty hands when I go for a teaching interview. Oy. Fingers crossed we both find jobs we adore!

[Reply]

Good luck with decluttering. I find it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself. Once you get rid of physical stuff, the mental stuff gets easier. Good luck!

[Reply]

I am on the same boat. Normally when you start moving stuff around other things come up. Hopefully good.

So when you have to do the punches during workout 1… I position myself so that my punches land square in Jillian’s face. lol. No joke.

Good for you! I think decluttering your life makes things a lot easier, and I’ve been working on the same thing for myself. Because my life needs some decluttering, too.

[Reply]

Sounds exactly like what I’m going through right now. My decluttering of my life involves blending two houses into one with my boyfriend (::sigh::, it’s so much better!), trying to find a job also because mine just makes my brain go to mush, and throwing out crap I no longer need anymore. Good luck and maybe you’ll find something you haven’t seen in a long time and it bring a smile to your face.

It doesn’t sound silly at all! I think it’s true. When you declutter your environment, your whole life runs much more smoothly. I’ve been a packrat for years (no really, go see some of the videos I’ve posted recently, you’ll be amazed at how much STUFF I have) and have been working very hard to declutter recently. Being surrounded by so much stuff has thrown up HUGE roadblocks in my life, time and again…and I’m really finding that as I take action to change my environment, other things in my life are falling into place. So I know it’ll make a huge difference for you too.

Good luck with your decluttering process :)
