Imagine my surprise when I get an @reply on Twitter yesterday that looks like this:

And it was true!

In the hours that followed, my internet world burst into flames. I burst into tears. Tons of emails went out. File restoration services had been looked into. Hosting and new domains had been purchased. Emails went unanswered. Oh and my internet wasn’t working so I couldn’t figure out what was going wrong. Then I cried some more.

It was an honest to goodness mess.

For way too many hours, I thought everything I had built up the past few years was gone forever. All posts, comments, memories. All of this visual experience I have to show when I try to tell people I know what I’m talking about when looking for a job. My proof. My writing. It was gone.

It’s not a good feeling.

A little while ago, everything fell back into place. For now at least. My blogs are back and you better believe I backed them up. I’ll be moving hosts to another with great support just in case something like this or any other situation arises.

The moral of this story is back up your sites and back them up often. The most recent back up I had was from late last year because I accidentally deleted the one I made a few weeks ago.

Go back everything up right now.

I’ll wait.

Did you do it?

Good.

Now I hope the weekend treats you well and you don’t have an internet crisis.

P.S. Can anyone help me move my blogs? My files are too big to import and I don’t know how to do it and I’m afraid I’ll break things.

i’m sort of lame. how do you back up your files and your posts?

Thanks for this reminder. I’ve been meaning to back up for months, and I still haven’t. I’m going to do it today. I’m glad you didn’t lose anything.

Do you need to do backup if you use Blogger, and you don’t have your own domain name?

Oh i know how you feel! The notebook I had before this one that I am using failed me and I lost tons of precious pictures =(. Learned to backup everything on CDs now =)

So sorry for all the drama! I haven’t been able to read any blogs for the last two days because I’ve been so swamped with work, so I actually missed seeing the invasion of the nuns.. But glad everything is back to normal!

I am so glad everything worked out okay. This weekend I am learning how to back up and I am doing it.

and, uhm, i’m embarrassed to say that i don’t have the slightest clue how to back up my blog. is it a lot of copy and paste, or what?

I use a wordpress plugin that sends me a backup of my database every Sunday in an email. Then I just archive it in gmail in case I need it. It wouldn’t help with my theme if my blog went down, but I wouldn’t lose any of my posts or comments.

Oh, man, I totally understand the panic. I had a personal writing blog I was using for short stories and other writing, and it disappeared. My story doesn’t have such a happy ending, as nothing was able to be recovered. It’s been tough to get back on that horse, as it has even spilled over to my regular blog, making it hard to just sit and write anything. I’m glad you were able to recover everything! I’ve learned my lesson the hard way that backing up should be done often.

I dont even know what a host is yet.

I’m actually freaking out right now about my computer’s current inability to read my external hardrive, and thus, it’s inability to back up my files. Not good. Not good at all.
