Sometime last week I got an email asking if I would like to review a copy of Jen Lancaster’s (of Jennsylvania fame) new book, Pretty in Plaid. My response was something like, “Duh, of course.” Then I seen the trailer she made for the book and knew this was probably the best idea ever.
Then I thought about you guys and asked for a second copy to giveaway to my readers. I know many of you are fans of her other books, Bitter is the New Black, Bright Lights, Big Ass and Such a Pretty Fat so I figured it would be a pretty sweet giveaway! Bitter is the New Black is probably one of my favorite books because Jen is just so ridiculously hilarious. Plus, she has two really cute puppies. AND is from Chicago!
Pretty in Plaid is all about Jen’s life through clothing and how your clothing defines you as a person. I just dug into it but I will be sure to write about my thoughts once I wrap it up!
Catch Jen Lancaster on her book tour where she is encouraging everyone to show up in their fiercest 80s garb. See the dates here and make sure you say hi to me at the Chicago stop on May 28th!
So like I said, I’m going to be giving one of copy of Pretty in Plaid away. How do you win, you ask?
Do you feel like how you dress defines who you are? Do you have that staple status piece in your wardrobe that makes you feel just awesome when you rock it?
(Mine is my Marc by Marc Jacobs bag. I adore it! It’s gorgeous and buttery soft and goes with everything. Plus, duh, it’s Marc Jacobs.)

I have a cotton red dress that is easy to dress up sexy with high heels and a necklace or dress down casual with flip flops and a tank top underneath. I actually just wore it in the video I just posted, ha. I always get compliments when I wear it, and I wish I had bought five when I got it.
Looked at the book trailer – loved that, never seen a trailer for a book before. Very cool.

You know…I go through so many outfits that i wear ALL THE TIME and then grow sick of. my absolute favorite piece of clothing though is this green, yellow, purple and white floral silk top from banana republic. It was a complete splurge and i absolutely love it. It looks fabulous on me and makes my hair look awesome. I want to wear it all year round even though its really a spring/summer look.
I agree with Maxie, your wardrobe shapes who you are.
I LOVE JEN LANCASTER and all her books, she’s such a fabulous writer!

I have two items – my huge YSL Tribute Tote, black patent leather, that always puts my outfit together and makes me feel fierce!
And my other is my 3.1 Phillip Lim over sized cardigan, black with sequined pockets, because I can dress it up, or wear it thrown over yoga pants and no one knows the difference!

To an extent I think what we wear defines us, but not too much. As long as you don’t take your style to any certain extreme, I don’t think people will stereotype you.
As for something I love to wear? I have two plain black tees (one v-neck and one low scoop neck) that hug my curves so beautifully. Both of those tees make me feel so confident. I love it because they’re not very dressy, but I can wear them on a night out or when I’m just lounging at home.

Just ONE item? Ugh. Hard. I guess my pick of the season are my (mustard) yellow patent leather peep toes from Christin Michaels. Small buckle detail on the side, nearly a 4″ heel… I’m still, um, learning to walk in them…

If I have to pick just ONE item in my closet then I would say my black Louboutin pumps. Why? It’s timeless. You can combine them with everything ALL the time and they compliment your outfits and make you even more fabulous. It’s around 4 inches tall too, don’t make me start on how sexy these heels make you

My clothes don’t define me as a person. Accessories, however? They are each like little words in the dictionary of my life. My go-to piece when I’m feeling like my outfit need a punch is a Kathy Van Zeeland purse in a fun Geranium color. And when I’m fishing for compliments, I wear my black wedges with cork heels. If these items are worn together, you know I’m out to cause trouble.
Thanks for the chance to win such a great book! I fell in love with Jen Lancaster’s writing after a friend told me that she reminded her of a bitter version of myself. I am totally taking that as a compliment.

I definitely think that the way we dress expresses us; but doesn’t really define us completely. As for the one piece in my cupboard that makes me feel like a rock star?
A new black blazer-ish sequined jacket. I dress it down with Converse, ripped jeans, a T and smudgy black eyeliner and WOW; makes me want to strut my stuff.

To be honest I don’t really have a signature piece of clothes or accessory because I have way too many purses… I often envy the girls who have just a purse or two (or even three or four) but have one they always use because it goes with everything and they always love it.

The way we dress defines us, people will always judge you on your appearance. At least here in France it is a national sport, so I guess I always expect to be evaluated on my looks.
It won’t stop me to keep on wearing skirts, no matter the season, hot or cold. I guess that’s my independent move, and I sure rock in it!

You know, I was actually thinking about what my wardrobe says about me. I’m finally going to start taking the advice of “dress for the job you want, not the job you have”! Currently my wardrobe projects an old version of me, who lacked confidence and wanted to blend in and hide.
Next week I’m doing a wardrobe makeover. I’m so excited.
I do have one status piece. I have a power handbag. It’s black leather, it’s large, and a hooked in the crook of your elbow type of bag. I love it.
The other neat thing is that I’m going to see Jennifer Lancaster this Friday with a couple of bloggy pals! This would be so great to read after that.

I definitely think my wardrobe defines who I am, but only because I’ve let it become another form of expression for myself. Growing up attending parochial schools with uniforms made me truly appreciate the sense of self that fashion can give a person. What I love the post about my own closet, is that I have a staple piece for whatever mood I feel like being in that day: beach bum (linen flats), preppy (seersucker shorts), classy (black and white sundress), sporty (shorts and a tank), hippy (awesome dress from Anthropologie). It’s such a great way to showcase myself through my style!
