school days

Walking into school on the first day with my book bag as full as can be, was my favorite part of school starting. Being able to use all new crayons, pencils and folders. Organizing my desk just so. Showing off my brand new pencil case or notebook to all the friends I hadn’t seen since June. Fresh paper with no indents from writing on the sheet before because this is a brand new pack. Brand new school bags stuffed with blank notebooks. I always wanted to use college ruled because I couldn’t wait to be grown up but never could get away with it because my school supply list said wide ruled. Mom vetoed that faster than I could say “but…but…all the other kids’ moms…” Brand new shoes, always black or brown because I wore a plaid skirted uniform and that was all that was allowed. White untouched sneakers for gym that would soon be scuffed and marked from dodge ball in the lot. Catching up with friends I hadn’t seen in months. Meeting my new teacher.

I wish I still had the same enthusiasm for school that I did in grade school, even if it was fleeting. It usually faded after a couple weeks and the thrill of it all was over.

School starts next week for me, five classes from 8AM to 2PM. I can’t say I’m really looking forward to it. Summer went by far too quickly. Now it will be cramming for tests, 10 page papers, note cards and study sessions.

Maybe it’ll help if I go buy a new pencil case.

my favorite was the first week when I would show off all my new clothes…

I don’t know why but there is something about brand new notebooks that gets me excited. I love buying them. I constantly have to talk myself out of buying them, and I’ve been out of college for 8 years!

[Reply]

I think a pencil case WOULD help. I hear they have some nice ones on Etsy!

[Reply]

I looove new school supplies. There’s just something about a blank notebook that has so much possibilities. Good luck with your classes!

trust me a new pencil case, couple of cute notebooks & folders, and new pens thrown in for good measure will DEFINETLY help take the edge off.

[Reply]

Haha, sucker. I’m done with school! WOO HOO!

Except, wait… that means I’m a 9-to-5er for life and I don’t get the cool vacations like spring break or summer vacation. Frak me.

Do you think buying a new pencil case and bringing it to work to show off to my boss would help?

[Reply]

i always loved shopping for school supplies. i went with one of my cousins this year and it made me happy.

on the bright side at least you have the internet to help you now with school. imagine going back to school in 1985! soooooooo much more difficult!

i tired to help : )

Weren’t newly sharpened pencils the BEST???

I totally remember my Keroppi pencil case. It was green and it was the bomb diggity — I loved the satisfying sound it made when I opened and closed it. And Trapper Keepers! Man those things were cool. They had all those weird designs on them. And you were NOT cool unless you had the LATEST Trapper Keeper.

I LIVED for back-to-school shopping. I still kind of do, but it’s not as exciting as when I was little.

[Reply]

I bought four new notebooks and a pack of highlighters.
I’m not sure if I have all the books I need.
I don’t know where I’m going.
I will be spending entire days on the UIC campus.
I’m taking all math or science classes.

I’m not excited about this at all right now. A small part of me is because I’m a nerd, but ugh…I’m nervous.

[Reply]

i bought some cute school supplies & it was so fun! i miss the first day of school.

[Reply]

I miss that feeling as well. I loved buying my new pencils and pens. I loved showing them off. Why did something so insignificant mean so much to us?

I miss school!

[Reply]

i always got anxious the day before school started, i could never help it. maybe a new pencil case oooooh or one of those uber kiddy folders could help you get excited :)

i bet you’ll do splendidly. woo.

[Reply]

I always loved school supply shopping(and still do!) Remember Lisa Frank notebooks? I definitely remember wanting the college ruled notebook paper too.

[Reply]

I still love the idea of starting school. I loooove school supply shopping and find it incredible that now staples have preorganized school supply shopping lists for parents. I remember my mother getting so frustrated that the school didn’t send out the lists until it was almost time to go back.

Yeah, so I still get excited, but the novelty wears off after I’ve gone to at least one of every class.

This year I took summer courses, so today was spent writing a 10 page paper! Awesome! But. It’s almost done, I just need to finish the last page and edit, and then I will submit it tomorrow and not have to think about it ever again :)

Good luck with the looming start, our fall semester starts September 3rd.

[Reply]

I still go school supply shopping and I’m starting my sixth year of college in two weeks. I usually at least look forward to the first day, then it all goes downhill from there.

[Reply]

I’m a nerd and I concur that a new pencil case will help.

[Reply]

I’m totally with Deutlich here — find a kick-ass pencil case and post it on your new blog!!! ;)

[Reply]

In college, my vice was high-lighters. Not just yellow and orange. Hot pink and purple. I still think hot pink is the choice for highlighting… if you are on the market for a new high-lighter.

Good luck with classes! Definitely buy yourself a pencil case. I bet Etsy has some cute ones!

I love the smell of new notebook paper and the crispness of the sheets before they’re written on. I always get nostalgic for school this time every year, but I know I would hate it if I were actually back in school.

[Reply]

Oh wow – full time student! I finished my undergrad last year and after freaking out for about 6 months I’ve loved every moment of full time employment.

I’ve picked up a grad school course to tick away at but I think I’m going to give myself some time before going back, if I do. I would want to come at it with that wild enthusiasm you talk about….until the thought of seminar classes and 50 page papers doesn’t make my skin crawl

(don’t let anyone you love do a politics degree)

Good luck lady, what are you studying?

[Reply]

Enjoy it while you can. School from 8 to 2 is still better than work from 8 to 5 (plus overtime “as required”)!

[Reply]

You’re telling me… I’m going into year 9 of post-secondary. Gah!
I’m buying a new schoolbag today :)

[Reply]

jamie! i tagged to in a meme! get to it!

[Reply]

a pencil case will absolutely help! I may buy one as well…..

[Reply]

I always hated college ruled paper because I write really big!

[Reply]

A pencil case would definitely help in this case. Office supplies can cure any evil!

What are you going to school for?

[Reply]

New shoes and a kick ass pencil case sound like a good combo to me!

[Reply]

go to seejanework.com, that’s where i’m getting all my stuff from and i can’t wait for it to arrive!

[Reply]

even in college i bought new pretty notebooks. it made me feel better.

[Reply]

Seriously though, I LOVE buying school supplies. Like more than anything. I actually miss school because I miss buying school supplies. That’s probably why I always try to make learning plans for myself…so I can buy notebooks and pens and index cards. I’m weird.

But in any event, go to Target and try to make yourself feel better. Your schedule does sound totally crazy!!

[Reply]

I’m addicted to school supplies. Even though I’m in college, I still buy cute colorful folders, notebooks, binders… whatever I can find. It eases the pain of difficult college courses.

I definitely suggest getting a pencil case, or SOMEthing adorable to carry around that will remind you of the good ol’ days. :)

[Reply]

I was always a big fan of new pens and crayons. I’ve been known to buy them even when I don’t need them, just because they make me feel better.

Good luck with the new semester!

[Reply]

I used to LOVE back to school shopping!

[Reply]

You can do it. It will be hard, it will suck at some points, but you will be okay. :)

An excuse to buy school supplies is nothing to turn your nose up at.

[Reply]

i know the feeling. my favourite thing was cracking open a new notebook and writing the date and subject oh so neatly. there was a gradual decline in the appearance of my writing as the year went on. but allll my notebook started out so ridiculously neat!!

[Reply]

a new pencil case might help you to rock it on the first day of school.

might i suggest something from sanrio (sanrio.com)?

i have a weakness for hello kitty! stationary, and i highly recommend any of the sanrio metal pencil cases. i go especially weak at the knees for little twin stars. :)

I start in 2 weeks, and maybe I’m a dork? But I was still absolutely excited when I bought my new one strap backpack and filled it with stuff I need. What school are you going to?

[Reply]

this reminds me of one of my out of control target shopping excursions the other day. i was compelled to pick up at least three notebooks, a box of crayons, two packs of pretty pens, scissors and a box of kleenex. (among many other things) my better judgment took over before i checked out, but in the line for register number 3 and i opted to leave them on the already overcrowded shelves, full of other things i should have never picked up. i did make it out with the crayons. i love school supplies. i dont feet the same for school. thank god i graduated and havent taken the plunge back into that pool…

[Reply]

so some days i want to go back to school….but then i think about writing paapers, tests, etc. i’ve been out of school for almost 2 years (grad school) and really, i like my freedom. but best of luck to you!

[Reply]

Meh. Pencil case. Get the BIG box of crayons with the built-in sharpener so you will feel superior to all the kids who only have 8 colors.

[Reply]

I’m starting school in a few weeks too- I’m excited and can’t wait to use my new school gear! hehehe I feel like a little kid.

[Reply]

I adored simply buying the school supplies. And now that I’m not going to school, I feel confused since I’m not shopping for them. It’s weird.

[Reply]

As much as I love school (I know, massive nerd, lol) it’s already stressing me out–it’s just not FUN like it used to be. I say buy the fun school supplies…I may or may not buy glittery pencils every year!

I can already see myself looking like a hot mess in the Government Documents section of the library (it’s like a cave—nobody ever ventures far enough to find it!) with stacks of 3X5s. Oh the joys of being a student.

Good luck with all things school! We can do it. =)

[Reply]

My love of school supplies has turned into a love of office supplies.

And summer? Woah, it went by SO quickly. It didn’t even feel like summer at all because I was so busy. Sigh.

[Reply]

I too miss those school days. I was actually just reminiscing about that with my mom and best friend. I MISS those days. I cannot wait (well, maybe I can) until I have kids so I can relive life through those experiences.

…and that just made me feel pathetic and sad, lol.
